It's Potty Time

It's Potty time, or at least close to it, at our house as Ava's been asking to sit on the potty, "like a big girl".

What's your best potty training advice?

I have never potty trained a girl, so my experiences are probably a little different than yours might be. I'd just say: let her go for it while the interest is there, be prepared for lots of accidents (especially when you're out), expect that she might backslide sometimes in her progress, and be positive. I'm sure you'll do a great job.

Hi Lori-
I waited until Lydia was really ready (2 yrs. 9 months for her), and we did Potty Training in a Day. It's an old school book, but it was really a great method for us (especially because it involved a baby doll!). It was very time-intensive, but it worked! Also, it was helpful for LYdia to run around naked because I think she felt like if she had panties on it was like a diaper, but she would never have an accident when she was naked. It seems gross, I know, but she was potty trained really well after about a week. But just be prepared for it to be the longest week of your life--we really didn't go anywhere and I was at her mercy 24/7 so we could run to the potty. By the end of the week I was crawling the walls, but we could start venturing out!!

My best advice: don't give up! The first few days you will want to quit. Don't quit! It really does get better. I have, of course, only potty trained boys up until this point, but I know that potty training is a very time consuming process. Just make sure you pick a week when you will be home a lot!

Oh and make sure you always have an extra change of clothes, underwear, socks AND shoes in your car in case you do go somewhere - you never know when there might be an accident.

Good luck!
