Jenny's blog prompted this post - thanks, Jenny.
I'd like to start reading stuff besides children's books, self-help type books and church books. All of these are great but I just need some recreational reading ideas.
What 3 books are on your "must read" list?

lori - you must join our book club! right now we are reading "cold mountain" by charles frazier. it's excellent so far. we meet next on september 5th - let me know if you wanna come!
One book that I loved was called "A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana by Haven Kimmel. This book made me laugh out loud several times and I have nominated it twice at our book club but no one wants to read it. I also have enjoyed reading the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. If you like Science fiction/fantasy then Sabriel by Garth Nix is really good. I like to read youth books also so "A Long Way from Chicago" by Richard Peck made me laugh, and "The Ordinary Princess" by M.M. Kaye. I could go on and on but these are some that I really did enjoy.
My problem is that I can't ever remember the best books I've read, even if they are great. But I can remember enjoying these:
1. Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts (young woman has a baby in Walmart)
2. The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom (an autobiography about a christian holocaust survivor who helped many Jews escape the Nazis. This is grim, but EXCELLENT!)
3. Mystery novels by Harlan Coben. My dad and sister told me about this author. He writes a series about a guy named Myron Bolitar (which I've never read) as well as stand alone mystery novels. I've tried "Just One Look," "Gone For Good," and "Tell No One." Sometimes he writes briefly about graphic topics - murders, violence, etc - so it depends how sensitive you are. They are great page-turners though.
I also love most books by Elizabeth Berg. Open House, Ordinary Life (short stories), and A Year of Pleasures (most recent read) have been great.
Hmm ... so many to choose from. Three favorites:
1. The Kite Runner
2. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
3. The Time Traveler's Wife
I found your blog through someone elses....the Schellmans???
Anyway,
The Kite Runner was really good, but kind of disturbing. The Secret Life of Bees--I read that this summer and it was a quick read, but good. The Parcel of Patterns--that's stuck in my head from a few years ago. My favorite books are actually the Harry Potter Series, the Tolkien books, and stuff by Robert Jordan---more sci fi/fantasy/historical.
Thanks for the great ideas ladies!
